Yota Morimoto is currently attending the sonology exams as an external jury expert. Being here at the Koninklijk Conservatorium brings back old memories. Yota came to The Hague from Japan because of the institute’s international recognition. He studied with Paul Berg, Kees Tazelaar, Joel Ryan, Raviv Ganchrow and may other teachers at KC. They all still have an influence on my work, Yota tells us. By now, Yota became a very successful artist himself working internationally as an composer, sound artist and researcher.

He composes for public spaces. In the video, you can see his latest work for the Changi Airport in Singapore, rated the world’s best airport and one of the biggest hubs in Asia. The piece is called forest and invites you to immediately relax and dream of a nice destination….quite a remarkable effect on one of the busiest places in the world. His favourite public space at the KC is Arnold Schönberg in the Entrance Hall. When we asked him to compose something for our public space he jokily answers: I dare not compose music under Schönberg’s gaze. Yota was born in Brazil and stayed after his studies in The Hague. He holds a master's degree in Sonology from the Royal Conservatoire and Ph.D. in composition from the University of Birmingham UK. His works attend to the materiality of sound and explores non-conventional approaches to generating and transmitting sonic matters. He composes for musicians, ensembles and public spaces, presents works at musea, festivals and conferences such as Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and Filmmuseum Amsterdam. He also collaborated with New European Ensemble and Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
