Are you passionate about singing and do you dream of a career in the profession? The Vocal Studies programme at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague offers you the chance to develop your talent and make your dreams come true.
Teacher Amand Hekkers tells
Main subject teacher in Vocal Studies Amand Hekkers started his own singing journey as a student at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. He has spent years singing various roles and teaching at various international conservatoires. His specialisation is the tenor voice. Many of his singers have found their way to the major opera stages.
Amand: ‘I had a very nice study period and a lot of laughter. That is so important. At the opera class led by Kenneth Montgomery, I completed my studies. Now I enjoy passing on my knowledge to the next generation of singers.'
As a teacher, Amand emphasises technique: ‘A solid technical foundation is crucial for your whole career. I still share the technique I learnt from Gabriella Ravazzi in Genoa with my students. During my lessons, I spend 40 to 45 minutes on technique before we work on repertoire. I also help my students prepare for their professional careers.'
‘He creates such a safe and open space for students to find and develop their own voice and use it in the most efficient way as an artist.’ Liam Bonthrone, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
‘He opened my eyes to the importance of practice and how to implement it when developing a solid foundation of vocal technique.’ Kieran White, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
‘Amand built up my technique with his Italianate approach to the voice, focusing on vowels, support and inhalare la voce. He gave me the tools to understand my voice and to sing freely and healthily.’ Glen Cunningham, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
What makes this programme unique?
The Royal Conservatoire offers high-quality education and a close-knit, warm community. 'Students arrive here in a warm bath. The network you build, with musicians and other singers, is invaluable.'
Tips for future students
Amand stresses that the course requires a lot of perseverance and dedication. 'It is an intensive study with long days. Besides singing, you also take subjects such as music theory and languages. You have to really want it and be talented. If so: come and follow your dream! Try it, otherwise you will regret it later.'
Good preparation is essential for the audition. 'Work with your teacher on the right repertoire and make sure you have a solid theoretical basis. At an audition, we assess the overall package, so make sure your video is of good quality.'
