Meet a talent: Pablo Cruz Placer

13 October 2022

To give you an idea of the many activities of our Fundraising & Partnerships department, we will share some relevant and interesting stories every know and then. Furthermore, will also introduce some of the talents who received an award or scholarship or contributed to a special project. This week: Pablo Cruz Placer, a versatile jazz musician who was awarded the Fonds 1999 Top Scholarship this year.

Pablo Cruz Placer is a young musician, saxophonist and composer. Born and raised in Havana City, a fertile ground for music where influences from different cultures converge, he has developed his career mainly as a jazz musician. He graduated from the University of the Arts (ISA) in a classical music bachelor programme for saxophone. At the same time, he has been notably active in the Cuban jazz scene, where he has supplemented his own style with the diversity of Afro-Cuban and Latin-American music. After many years playing as sideman, he is currently looking forward to starting his own project, perhaps soon recording his compositions in album format.

Awards
The talent of Pablo did not go unnoticed. In 2017 he was awarded with the first prize in the JoJazz competition. This year he received Fund for Excellence Fonds 1999 Top Scholarship, an important bursary to stimulate the careers of students of the Royal Conservatoire.

During the Royal Conservatoire Award Show in Amare on September 24th, Pablo gave a fantastic performance with a band featuring students of the Royal Conservatoire, although they were able to rehearse together only once. We spoke Pablo about the Royal Conservatoire and the importance of winning the Scholarship. You can watch the video below!
