If dancing is in your blood and you feel a strong attraction to the fascinating world of ballet and modern dance, Royal Conservatoire Dance is for you. To reach the pinnacle of dancing with one of the major national or international dance companies, you have to start training by the age of ten. Dancing is an art form, but the physical demands made on performers are similar to those of top-class athletes. We train talented dancers for a future career as creative and independent artists, with an open mind, craftsmanship, passion and ambition.
Curriculum
The dance curriculum consists of classical ballet, pointe technique (for girls) and jump technique (for boys), pas de deux, modern dance, classical repertoire, the repertoire of the Dutch School, the repertoire of the Nederlands Dans Theater and improvisation.

Other subjects that are taught are history of dance, career planning, creating a personal solo and preparing a study plan, as well as make-up, yoga, Pilates and body conditioning.
The curriculum is based on the demands made by the international professional dance world and is designed to help students to acquire the technique, artistic ability and physical control required to perform the repertoire and the various dance styles to the standard required by the leading companies. Romantic ballets like Giselle, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, neo-classical ballets by Balanchine and Robbins, as well as ballets by Hans van Manen, Jiří Kylián, Nils Christe, Johan Inger, Crystal Pite, Jiři Pokorny, Paul Lightfoot & Sol Leon, Lukas Timulak, Maurice Causey and others are all covered in the Dance programme’s extensive curriculum, enabling the students to develop into all-round dancers capable of performing classical and modern repertoire.
To further promote the professional development of its students, the Dance programme works closely with the Nederlands Dans Theater.

Activities
Open Studio days
Open Studio days are organised when parents are invited to come and attend dance lessons and observe the progress their children are making. The Open Studio days are held in October.
Studio Evenings
Two Studio Evenings are organised every school year, in November and March, in our own theatre. The ballet groups demonstrate the progress they have made in the various elements of the curriculum: classical ballet, modern dance, caractère, Spanish dance and repertoire.
Young Talent Project
Every year the students in ballet groups VI, VII, VIII and the Bachelor of Dance course present the Young Talent Project, a joint production of the Dance programme and the Nederlands Dans Theater.
The Young Talent Project represents a bridge between the student phase and a professional dance career. The inspiring project gives final-year pupils of the School for Young Talent and students of the Bachelor of Dance programme the opportunity to perform works from the repertoire of the Nederlands Dans Theater and to learn about the company’s methods.
End-of-Year performances
Every school year ends with a series of performances by all of the pupils and students in the school’s own theatre. The audience is presented with a varied programme of works from the classical and modern ballet repertoire, as well as new repertoire by international choreographers.
