Study information
As a student of the Bachelor programme in Clarinet at the Royal Conservatoire you will receive a solid training as an all-round professional musician who can perform as a soloist, in an orchestra or ensemble and as a chamber musician. The basic curriculum encompasses knowledge of the repertoire, interpretation of compositions, attaining a high level of proficiency in playing your instrument and learning to perform with others on the basis of a collective artistic vision. You will also learn how to cope with the stress that goes with performing and doing auditions. The profession of musician is extremely varied. Many musicians work both as performers and as teachers. You will therefore have the option during the course of taking a Minor in Education and so gaining teaching qualifications.
The Classical Music Department is at the heart of today’s music culture. We challenge you to develop your own creative vision and talent. Most of our teachers pursue national and international careers as performing musicians. The students in the Classical Music Department play in the Conservatoire’s symphony orchestra, which organises many very interesting projects, as well as forming the basis for the Department’s successful two-year Orchestra Master in association with the Residentie Orkest. In the second and third years of the course you will be able to perform with your own ensemble at the annual Haagse Hout Chamber Music Festival. Some ensembles will also have an opportunity to perform at The Hague International Chamber Music Festival.
From the second year of the course you can take a minor in Historical Clarinet or Jazz Clarinet, and from the third year you can opt for individual lessons in Bass Clarinet.
The Bachelor in Clarinet is a four-year course. You will have group lessons in chamber music, clarinet quartet, historical development and orchestral part studies. In addition to lessons in your main subject, you will also have weekly individual lessons with a coach-pianist. You will participate in many projects (orchestral, chamber music, and contemporary music). For the final exam you will give a public concert consisting of a programme you have compiled yourself.
