Both institutes have been conducting research into the development of new forms of acoustic media art since the 1950s. Since 2000, international partnerships in this discipline have been facilitated in Berlin by the Edgard Varèse Guest Professorship for Computer Music, which is awarded by the German academic exchange programme DAAD. The equivalent Konrad Boehmer Visiting Professorship was established in The Hague in 2016.

Graduates of the master’s specialisation in Audio Communication & Sonology earn an exceptional double degree that offers outstanding prospects for an international career. Successful candidates will spend their first year studying in Berlin (Audio Communication and Technology) and the second year at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague (Sonology). Students who successfully complete the course obtain a double degree: a Master of Science from the TU Berlin and a Master of Music in Sonology from the Royal Conservatoire.

There are only six places available on the course, which starts in the winter with the Audio Communication and Technology programme in Berlin, succeeded by the course in The Hague the following year.

Candidates apply in Berlin first. When accepted, they apply for the Sonology master’s programme before the beginning of the second semester in Berlin. When accepted in The Hague the follow a slightly different curriculum in the second semester in Berlin, while already preparing themselves for the second year in The Hague.
